Patrol Officer

The urban patrol officer: a police officer working the city beat can often expect a bit more action than their rural counterpart, depending on where they work. Typically, working in an urban environment may offer a greater variety of career options, such as motorcycle, bicycle, or mounted (horseback) positions, harbor patrol for those cities with a waterfront, etc. Another consideration is that generally there are more positions, and thus more openings for those jobs in urban settings. As a result, the salaries are often not as high as they might be for other, more specialized positions such as sheriff or state trooper. A police officer who has patrolled for some time may advance to become a detective, who is more focused on investigating crimes that have already happened.
