Police academies in the state of Florida are run by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Before being admitted to a police academy, new recruits are required to meet several criteria. These include the following: officer employment requirements (a basic level of standards), continued training/reeducation consisting of 40 hours every four years; to be job related, equivalency standard, for officers from out of state wishing to bypass the full academy, the BAT: basic abilities test, a panel of basic comprehension questions, the PAT: physical abilities test, a panel of physical standards deemed the minimum needed to serve as a police officer or corrections officer, and a criminal justice agency profile: a detailed and thorough background check to make sure the applicant meets the standards of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
